How to Do New Year’s Resolutions Like A Boss – Money Mindset Tips for Business Women

Have you already made New Year’s Resolutions for your business?

Are you still trying to figure out what goals you’d love to crush this year?

Or are you still dreaming up the bold vision you’d be excited to dive into over the next five years?

Why We All Need This

Whether or not you’re a business woman, entrepreneur or woman in business, this article will support you with money mindset tips on doing New Year’s Resolutions in a way that serves you to live your best life yet this year and this decade.

Being and Life Coach for Women and a Business Coach for Women Entrepreneurs has given me some insight into some of the obstacles high achieving women face when preparing to step into a new phase of life, or stepping out of their comfort zone to really push their limits. This article provides valuable tips for support.

The Money Mindset Tip Most Successful Women in Business Already Apply

The thing I love most about coaching women is supporting you, me, all of us to be more confident and excited about our lives, relationships and businesses.

Our businesses do not excel in a vacuum, and the most successful business women are those who know this universal money mindset tip –  taking the time they deserve to figure out what they want, why they want it and how it will change their lives or businesses.

Randomly listing goals or new year’s resolutions because they sound good or impressive is not the magic pill to growing and sustaining a successful business.  Identifying what goals/dream/desire/vision will best lead you forward is a key money mindset tip.

What Women Really Want Now

For this article, I asked 10 women who had written their New Year’s resolutions to share them with us, and I’m grateful they were willing to indulge us.

For Sade, Lori, Jenn and Dina, this is the year they will….

Lose the baby weight;

Pay off all their credit card debts;

Buy their first home;

Start a side hustle with their hobby to test drive it; and

Travel.

For Adeyinka, this is the year she will….

Travel to Kenya to start laying a foundation for the school she’s been dreaming of building;

Start a family with her new husband; and

Hire a financial planner and set financial goals for this decade.

For Jenn K, this is the year she will break through to six figures in her part time business so that she can, in her words, “legitimately quit her day job without the drama or guilt.”

This year, Rianne and Tamara will hire personal trainers to meet their 25 – 40lbs weight loss goals and create sustainable healthy lifestyles.

For Melanie, this is the year she will quit smoking and drink more water.

And Sam will find a job that challenges her and yet is flexible enough for her to spend time more with her husband and three daughters. Sounds wonderful!

Thanks for sharing ladies.

Are New Year’s Resolutions Really Effective?

If you google New Year’s Resolutions, you’ll find thousands of articles all with their own spin.

From “Don’t Set New Year’s Resolutions Because they Don’t Work” to “3 Ways to Create New Year’s Resolutions that Make You a Winner,” the sky is the limit, and you have to figure out what serves you best in sticking to and meeting the goals you set for yourself.

One thing I’ve noticed in my personal life and with clients I coach is that for some of us, it is real easy to make New Year’s Eve resolutions.  And for purpose-driven business women and entrepreneurs, our drive, our creativity, big hearts, and the desire to make a huge impact in the world sets up to make resolutions that are sometimes, quite unrealistic.

It’s no secret (and many of us have personal experience) that while these resolutions are easy to make, they could be challenging to keep, and that’s why by mid-February, New Year’s resolutions, like diet plans might get kicked to the curb to gather dust like the Peloton bikes we just knew we’d wake up at 6am every day to ride.

By March, some of my clients are ready to just abandon that new goal and settle back into old limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging patterns.

Studies show that less than 10 percent of people (not just women) who make New Year’s Resolutions achieve their goals.

So, if you’re still here, you’re probably wondering why we even make these resolutions if the chance of keeping up with them is low. I have good news for you.  From a money mindset perspective, we are more likely to shift our limiting beliefs and change our behavior if create New Year’s Resolutions or set goals (at any time), than if we don’t.

New Year’s Resolutions are only as effective as the Mindset used to create them.  What do we want?  What is our intention?  How will it serve our life, relationships, business/career?  What limiting beliefs are keeping us stuck/unrealistic/in our comfort zones?

Just hoping we can live our best life doesn’t cut it.  Being honest with ourselves and being the woman who is willing to put in the time/effort/investment/money/focus to be/do/create whatever IT is, is key.

If not, the crappy stories we’ve nurtured over the years show up again to sabotage us.

What Are Crappy Stories?

Crappy stories like….

I don’t have enough time;

I don’t have enough money;

I can’t afford it;

I’m not young enough/pretty enough/skinny enough/fat enough/good enough/whatever your version of enough-ness you’re carrying with you is;

I need another degree before I can X;

When I get X then I’ll do Y;

Or Nothing ever works out for me; and any other story you can dream up.

If you want this to be the year where crappy stories STOP sabotaging your dream life, business, relationships or career, then keep reading.

How to Do New Year’s Resolutions Like a Boss

I’ll tell you a secret.  I know myself well enough to know that New Year’s Resolutions are not my thing so I don’t make them.  If I want to do something, I usually don’t wait for January 1st to roll around to do it.

I just DECIDE.

Yes, it’s that simple.  I simply decide.

And once I decide who/what I want to be/do/create, I make a commitment and get clear on the next steps.

While this is not applicable to everyone, I’ve found that holding on to a dream until a New Year or decade to roll around is one way I’ve self-sabotaged myself in the past.  For me, it has been my ultimate procrastination tool.

Whatever your dream is….

Whether you’re resolving to start a new relationship, make more profits, add more clients or a team, quit smoking, exercise consistently, travel more, or have a baby; whatever it is, everything starts with a decision.

This year, I invite you to do new year’s resolutions like a boss and boldly decide.

Decide, commit, and create a plan to get it done, and go do it.

Magic happens once you decide.

No pressure.

No right or wrong.

No judging, or guilt or racing to get nowhere fast.

Money Mindset Tips to Create Your Dream Life, Business or Relationships

Identify a few options and make a powerful choice – Narrow your choices and decide what you want to achieve this year.

Invest at least a few minutes to wrap your head around your resolution/goal/dream/vision.  Why do you want this?  What will your life look life with this new goal?  What will life be like without it?  What makes this year/now the best time to go for it.

While it’s important to be realistic, dream BIG.  Identify any limiting beliefs or self-sabotaging patterns that show up to keep you playing small, shrinking back in fear or reminding you that you don’t have the time or money.   You’re resourceful; you can be/do/create anything you desire.

Identify what you’ve done in the past when these thoughts and patterns have shown up and decide what will be different this time around.  It’s probably not the first time you’ve tried to get healthy or lose weight or communicate better with your spouse or finally breakthrough to 6 or 7 figures in your business.  What will be different this time?

Give yourself a deadline.  By when do you want to achieve this goal?  Remember, baby steps are helpful if this is something you’re struggling with.

Be kind to YOU.  It’s easy to cut someone else slack, but many high achieving women have not yet learned how to go easy on themselves.  Incorporate support and self-care into whatever you’re working on.  Always take time to celebrate the small wins.  This supports you to believe in yourself and shut down those voices that tell you otherwise.
